Before you travel to Costa Rica we recommend you read this section to better understand the country's ecology and prepare for your trip.

Regions and Habitats

Small but delightfully diverse.  That’s Costa Rica.  It’s why you have so many options to enjoy your Costa Rica trip doing exactly what YOU want to do.

In this section, we describe something about the major Regions and Habitats, but your own Costa Rica tour can be planned around any combination of these – or even in smaller niches if you have specialized objectives like surfing or bird watching.  Just give a call toll free at 1-800-345-7422 and let us get started helping arrange an itinerary around your ideas.

Small But Rewarding For a Reason

Costa Rica nature tours and Costa Rica vacation packages are among the most rewarding in the world. The geography creates a diversity of experiences not found anywhere else--read on.

Our country contains an astounding array of flora and fauna vastly greater than countries scores of times larger. Much of this variety is due to its tropical location, being flanked by two oceans, and its position as a land bridge between North and South America.

In addition it has a highly varied landscape. Eastern and western lowlands are separated from each other by four mountain ranges that travel from the northwest to the southeast. In bisecting the country, these mountain ranges isolate areas from one another creating several distinct Regions that are very different in their climate, flora and fauna. Adventure vacations and ecotourism in Costa Rica offer a wide variety of experiences that can be customized to your preferences.

Costa Rica can be divided into 6 regions based upon similar characteristics of elevation, temperature, and patterns of rainfall. A custom Costa Rica travel package created by Costa Rica Connection can mix and match the many different kinds of Costa Rica attractions these regions provide to give you an optimum travel experience.

  • Elevation: From the sea at 0 feet to the top of Chirripo Grande at 12,530, there is a lot of variation in a small area.   The mountains and valleys create dozens of microclimates.
  • Temperature:  For every 1000 foot rise in elevation, temperatures drop 3 degrees F°.  Pick your favorite from tropical to cold – with the moderate middle being in the 3,000 to 4,000 foot range.
  • Rainfall:  Rainfall is quite variable by region and season in Costa Rica.  From the hot, dry Pacific Northwest (perfect beach vacation!) to the rainy southeast slopes of mountains (incredible biodiversity) and everything in between, you can experience almost any weather patterns you prefer.  The Green Season (summer months) is typically the rainy time in Costa Rica.

Use our website to explore the various regions you might explore in your Costa Rica tour.  We’d be glad to help narrow the choices down around your vacation preferences – just give us a call.
