The Central Valley includes the capital, San Jose, Costa Rica, and its metro area. It is the first place most visitors see when they fly in to Costa Rica. You may easily make this modern city the home base for your Costa Rica vacation, taking day trips to sample the diversity of the country. Or it may be the start and end points of a tour of Costa Rica that covers a lot of ground. Either way, you will find the city fun and the people friendly. In the geographic center of Costa Rica, is a broad and fairly level Central Valley at about 3900 feet elevation. The region is increasingly described as the Greater Metropolitan Area (GMA) and includes the capital city of San José and the cities of Heredia, Cartago, and Alajuela. Including numerous smaller communities of the area, the region contains approximately 2/3rds of Costa Rica's population. This area has a pleasant cool to mild climate with temperatures mostly in the upper 60's and 70's °F.
Although the cities of the GMA have good museums, theaters, restaurants, excellent San Jose hotels and historical buildings, these cities generally serve as a starting point for international visitors arriving at the airport for Costa Rica vacation package tours and custom tours to Costa Rica's famous volcanoes, beaches, rivers, rainforests and mountains.
