Several beautiful beaches are located south of Limon. Cahuita National Park is at the edge of the small town of Cahuita and contains lush vegetation that ends at a white sand beach fringed with coconut palms. The waters protect coral reefs where snorkeling is highly rewarding (to avoid damaging the delicate corals, please do not touch them). In the forest behind the beach one can encounter white-throated capuchin monkeys, a variety of birds, crabs, lizards and more.

Another beautiful light sandy beach shaded by coconut palms beckons sunbathers and swimmers at the little seaside community of Puerto Viejo de Limon. A number of restaurants behind the beach serve the mouth-watering local cuisine. Another attractive and tranquil beach south of this community can be found at the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. Rocky ledges a short distance off-shore harbor an abundance of tropical fish and marine life, making snorkeling worthwhile.

Wildlife can be encountered in the national parks and even along the roadsides. Sloths can be seen in trees just off the roads either sunning themselves after a rain, feeding, moving slowly, or more likely sleeping

Bird watching is rich in this area. Even more so in late September and October, when resident species are joined by thousands of migrating birds “funneled” along the coast by the interior mountainranges that run diagonally across the country towards the coast.
